Choosing between deluxe units and a restroom trailer

This is the first decision and it is usually settled by the venue rather than by preference.

A restroom trailer offers the closest thing to an indoor experience: multiple stalls, flushing fixtures, running water, mirrors, interior lighting and climate control. The trade-off is siting. Trailers typically need a level pad, room to tow in and position, and a power supply. Not every field, barn yard or garden can offer those.

Deluxe portable units need none of that. They are self-contained, go anywhere a standard unit goes, and still provide an interior sink, a flushing bowl, a mirror and better lighting. For a wedding of modest size, or a site a trailer cannot reach, they are frequently the better answer rather than the compromise answer.

Sizing for a reception, not a four-hour event

The standard planning ratio of one unit per 50 guests assumes four hours. Weddings routinely run longer, and most serve alcohol throughout — the two adjustments that push counts up hardest.

Count from the start of the ceremony to the end of the reception, not from the start of dinner. A four o'clock ceremony and an eleven o'clock finish is a seven-hour event, and it should be sized as one.

Placement: close enough, out of frame

Placement is a three-way compromise between guest convenience, sightlines, and where a delivery truck can physically go.

Guests should not be walking a long way, particularly older relatives and anyone in heels on soft ground. But units should not appear in ceremony or reception photographs either. The usual resolution is placement to one side of the reception area, screened by planting, fencing or draping, on a path that is walkable in the dark.

Two details that get missed: light the path if the reception runs past sunset, and check that the route is navigable for guests with mobility needs rather than assuming the direct line works.

Accessible provision

Weddings bring together guests across a wide age range, and accessible units are frequently needed for reasons that have nothing to do with permitting.

An accessible unit also serves as a family or changing stall, which is useful at any wedding with small children. It is easier to include one in the plan from the start than to add one late.

Talk to your venue early

Venues that host weddings regularly usually have opinions about where restrooms go, and often have constraints you would not guess — a septic field you cannot drive over, a lawn that cannot take a trailer, a neighbour sightline they care about.

Walk the placement with the venue before booking rather than on delivery morning. It is the cheapest hour you will spend on the whole rental.

Booking timing

Wedding season concentrates into a limited number of desirable Saturdays, and restroom trailers are among the first items to book out for those dates.

If your date is a peak-season Saturday and a trailer is central to your plan, book it as early as you can. If you are flexible on unit type, you have more room to move.
